Little Rock, Arkansas – City officials in Little Rock spoke on Friday about the recent spike in homicides, stressing their dedication to public safety and showcasing continuous efforts to reduce crime.

Heath Helton, the chief of police of Little Rock, recognized the human impact of crime statistics.

“We know behind every statistic, there’s a victim, a family, and a community left shaken,” Helton said.

Frank Scott Jr., the mayor of Little Rock, also voiced his disgust at the recent violence. He did, however, also commend law enforcement’s efforts.

“To be honest, I’m furious. These incidents occurred last week as well as this week. However, I’m also appreciative of our cops’ efforts to keep our community secure,” Mayor Scott said.

According to Chief Helton, a 75% clearance rate has been achieved in six of the eight homicides that have occurred this year by arrest. Additionally, he pointed out that this is higher than the 50-51% national norm.

According to Chief Helton, two more warrants have been obtained for recent events, and one of those eight homicides is being investigated as a suspicious death.

Chief Helton also underlined how crucial the Real Time Crime Center is to identifying and apprehending suspects. He also urged greater collaboration from the general population.

“In order to promote candid communication and collaboration, our department has fortified ties and collaborations with community leaders, faith-based organizations, and local organizations.

“Speak up if you see something,” he continued.

In comparison to the previous five years, there has been a 19% drop in overall crime, according to Mayor Scott. He did concede, though, that citizens’ feelings of safety needed to be addressed.
“We have to address the feeling of safety in our cities, and it’s my job to make certain that every resident, whether [you’re] in Southwest Little Rock or West Little Rock, you feel safe,” stated Mayor Scott.
