Divergent opinions are expressed over the proposed lane adjustments for Little Rock’s Markham Street
Little Rock, Arkansas – Little Rock locals’ opinions on the proposed lane alterations for Markham Street are divided.
According to city authorities, the project will create a center turn lane and combine the right and left lanes next to The Oyster Bar into one on either side.
One million dollars has been given to the city for construction that will begin on Woodrow Street and go all the way to Ridgeway Street. In addition to slowing down traffic, which Antoinette Johnson claimed would make the area safer, city authorities stated that the objective is to increase the neighborhood’s pedestrian friendliness.
“It would also slow down the traffic on Markham because the lanes are a little thinner and allow the businesses on Markham to have outdoor seating,” Johnson said.
Johnson claimed to have supported the initiative for more than a year. Although she mentioned that Hillcrest is usually the place where people go to socialize, she hopes that Markham businesses would gain from this update.
“It would be wonderful if we had two commercial areas because historically all of this was pedestrian-oriented,” Johnson said.
Hershal Ground stated that while some people may find the alteration to be convenient for cars and pedestrians, it isn’t.
“I think it would put an unnecessary strain on the traffic flow through here,” Ground said.
