In coming weeks, Arkansas law enforcement will intensify its crackdown on speeding
Little Rock, Arkansas – Drivers beware: as part of a new campaign that will run from July 10 to July 31, Arkansas law enforcement agencies plan to tighten down on speeding.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the United States Department of Transportation, the Arkansas Highway Safety Office, and law enforcement agencies in Arkansas have joined forces to launch the “Speeding Slows You Down” campaign.
According to a press release from Arkansas State Police, 12,151 people lost their lives in speed-related crashes across the country in 2022.
Younger drivers made up the majority of those involved in speeding-related collisions during this time. Between the ages of 15 and 20, 35% of male drivers and 19% of female drivers were engaged in fatal crashes.
The campaign will force sheriff’s deputies, city police, and the Arkansas State Police to take tough measures against speeding.
“Speed limit signs are not suggestions,” Hagar said. “They are posted for the safety of the driver and others in and around the roadway. Unfortunately, we see people speeding every day. If you’re killed in a crash, or if you kill someone else, there’s no second chance. Speeding is not worth the risk.”
On local roads, drivers should exercise additional caution. According to police, local roads accounted for 87% of all traffic fatalities connected to speeding in 2022, as compared to interstates.
“We are asking our community to please slow down,” Hagar said. “Our goal is to save lives, and we’re putting all drivers on alert — the posted speed limit is the law. No excuses.”
