Lawmakers in Arkansas respond to former President Jimmy Carter’s passing
Little Rock, Arkansas – The Carter Center said on social media that former President Jimmy Carter died Sunday afternoon in Plains, Georgia, after being in hospice care for almost two years.
The 39th President of the United States was former President Carter.
A recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, he dedicated a significant portion of his post-presidential life to advancing human rights and assisting Habitat for Humanity in constructing homes for the underprivileged.
A few months after the former president underwent home hospice care in February 2023, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter received a dementia diagnosis and passed away in November of the same year.
Many Arkansas lawmakers, both present and former, expressed their condolences after learning of his passing:
In her condolence remarks, Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders mentioned that former President Carter was a man who always prioritized his faith. “Never was that more evident than in his work to help millions of people around the world in his post-presidency,” she said.
In a statement that was shared by both Bill and Hillary Clinton, Bill remarked that it was an honor to be able to give former President Carter a distinguished award. “I will always be proud to have presented the Medal of Freedom to him and Rosalynn in 1999, and to have worked with him in the years after he left the White House,” stated Bill Clinton.
Asa Hutchinson, a former governor of Arkansas, agreed with him. “Jimmy Carter will be remembered for his compassion, his servant’s heart & his long post-presidency record,” Hutchinson stated. “He set an example of public service through Habitat for Humanity & international relief work.”
In their condolences on the death of former President Jimmy Carter, Congressman French Hill, and his spouse also mentioned that his “post-presidency life of service is an example to all citizens.”
In a heartfelt statement, Senator Tom Cotton said that Carter had committed his life to serving the people. “He led a remarkable century-long life from the peanut farm to the White House,” he said.
Jimmy Carter, the former president, died at the age of 100.
