Storms that occurred during the Memorial Day weekend caused more than 40,000 people in Arkansas to lose power
Little Rock, Arkansas – Due to a series of destructive storms that swept across the northern region of the state during the Memorial Day weekend, thousands of people in Arkansas are without electricity.
The website PowerOutages.us reports that as of 10:51 a.m., 40,191 consumers do not have access to electricity. According to the data, most consumers who have experienced power outages are located in Benton County, representing more than 30,000 residents. In Logan County, there are almost 600 power outages.
These power outages result from violent storms and tornadoes that affected the region and caused them to touch down. As of this past weekend, the National Weather Service reported at least seven tornadoes, increasing the total number of tornadoes in May to sixteen.
According to the National Weather Service, tornadoes have been confirmed in Sevier, Boone, Marion, Baxter, Greene, and Benton counties. It has been verified that there have been at least eight deaths.
In the aftermath of the storms, Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced a state of emergency. An executive order that she signed permitted the Arkansas Division of Emergency Management to use two hundred and fifty thousand dollars to assist with the recovery process.
