Cabot, Arkansas – Ethan David, a senior at Cabot High School, has had his artwork chosen for the 2024 AP Art and Design Exhibit.

Last year, more than 80,000 portfolios were submitted by students for AP Art and Design, yet only 50 were chosen for the online exhibit.

“It will reach an audience of over 250,000 people,” David stated, “And it will serve as a teaching tool for classrooms.”

David expressed that he can barely recall a moment when art wasn’t a passion for him, and he has made significant progress throughout the years.

“I’ve sort of always engaged in [art],” David remarked. “I have a strong competitive spirit, so I often found myself watching videos on YouTube and thinking, ‘I can do that.’” Eventually, I improved gradually, and I simply kept going.

David expressed that his passion for art has been cultivated by his family, whom he acknowledges for their unwavering support.

He acknowledged that Cabot High Art Instructor Helen Goodman deserves significant recognition for her support and for permitting him to stay late to work on his projects.

Goodman expressed that teaching David brings her immense joy, and despite her 46 years in education, she notices qualities in him that are rare to find.

“He shows no fear at all,” Goodman remarked. “He is prepared to put in the effort.” Throughout my career, I have encountered very few students who dedicate as much time and effort to their work as he does.

She noted that the level of symbolism and personal significance David incorporates into his art distinguishes him from others.

The two pieces included in his portfolio delved into themes such as time and existentialism.

“He’s never truly content until that message is fully integrated into his work,” Goodman stated.
Goodman expressed some surprise at David’s selection for the exhibit, noting the challenge of being chosen for such an opportunity.

Goodman stated, “Out of the 80,000 portfolios, the works of 50 students were selected.” “He falls into that category.” It’s truly an incredible achievement.

She mentioned that if anyone was deserving of this recognition, it would be David, who has now made history as the first student from Cabot High School to receive this honor.

David expressed his astonishment upon receiving the email informing him that his work had risen from the digital heap to be showcased online indefinitely.
